Back in 2023, Pepsi decided to shake things up. Their lemon-lime soda Sierra Mist had never hit like they hoped, so they pulled the plug and launched a new drink: Starry. Bold name. Fresh branding. New start.


But here’s the thing though.


Turns out, someone else had already beat Pepsi to the punch. An online influencer — with a name just like the old soda — peeped game that Pepsi had let the Sierra Mist trademark lapse. She jumped in, scooped up the rights, and locked it down before the beverage giant could even react.


Just like that, the Sierra Mist trademark story made Pepsi switch lanes. They couldn’t use their own brand name anymore, and that’s how Starry was born.


So what’s the play?


Even the Big boys get outplayed when they don’t do their homework. That influencer? She saw a gap and moved smart. The lesson is simple:

Due diligence pays off.
